ServSafe Manager Recertification

A ServSafe Manager certificate is valid for 5 years from the date of the exam.

What people get wrong about renewal:

  1. There is no “renewal exam” discount and no grandfathering. You retake the same exam.

  2. The clock runs from your certificate date, not from the day your employer filed it.

  3. Some states layer their own food manager requirement on top and track it separately — a valid ServSafe certificate does not automatically satisfy a state licence.

  4. If your certificate expires while you are working, most jurisdictions treat it as working without a certified manager on site.

Practical approach: mark a calendar reminder 90 days before expiry, then do a diagnostic run rather than reading the book cover to cover. A timed practice exam shows which domains decayed in five years of not thinking about them.
